Vetropack Nemšová s.r.o. stood the test of the difficult year of 2009
VETROPACK NEMŠOVÁ s.r.o., the sole glass container producer for the drinks and food industry in Slovakia, had to face a number of negative factors in 2009. In spite of this, it managed to hold its leading position on the market, increased exports and invested in projects to improve the environment.
The most significant negative factor was the global crisis which significantly contributed to the fall in sales not only in the Slovak Republic but throughout Europe. The turnover of Vetropack Nemšová recorded a fall in 2009 of 16.5% compared with the previous year and represents 48.6 million EUR in value.
"An unexpected gas crisis added to the intensively developing world economic crisis in the first months of the year. There was also the effect of the introduction of the new European currency in the Slovak Republic. The relatively weak currencies of the neighbouring countries - Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland - significantly benefited the import not only of finished products, but also encouraged customers to go on convenient shopping trips to the border regions in the neighbouring countries," stated the company's director Gregor Gábel.
Despite this negative effect, Vetropack Nemšová managed to hold a leading position on the home market. Cooperation with key customers developed which was confirmed with several new projects especially in the alcoholic beverage sector. One of the new products of last year on the home market was a new bottle for 0.7 l Herold fruit spirits for the company Old Herold Trenčín. The total sale of glass containers reached 373 million, while 48.7 % of production was exported (in 2008 this was 41.7 %).
Investments continued to be made in the glassworks in 2009 with further modernisation. Among the most important projects was the completion of the new electrical filter. This state-of-the-art filtration device for cleaning fumes together with devices for the re-utilisation of waste heat from the melting aggregates represents the company's active approach to environmental protection. Vetropack Nemšová has two energy-saving glass furnaces with the latest melting technology and is very well prepared to continue to strengthen its position on the market.
Vetropack Nemšová produces about 200 types of glass containers while the biggest customers on the home market in 2009 were the already traditional producers of spirits with the biggest share of the market such as producers of wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages and vegetable and fruit processors such as the companies St. Nicolaus, Heineken, Hubert Sereď, GAS Familia, A+Z Rišňovský and Halász, Old Herold or Vinárske závody Topoľčianky. Among the most important export markets are those of Eastern Europe such as Hungary, Poland and Russia.
Vetropack Nemšová, where 361 people worked at the end of 2009, is a subsidiary of the Swiss group Vetropack Holding AG, a leading producer of glass containers in Europe. The group's turnover in 2009 fell by 10.7 % and reached 671.5 million Swiss franks. The group sold 3.97 billion glass containers. Its consolidated profit reached 78.4 million Swiss franks and was almost the same as the level of profit in the previous year. In 2009 Vetropack invested a total of 39.8 million franks into equipment and making production more efficient.
Vetropack holds an excellent position with production plants in Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Ukraine on the rapidly growing Eastern European market. At the end of 2009 the group had 3,000 employees.
